Sensitive Skin Care Requires Careful Examination Of Available
Products
Many people who suffer from dry skin may also have sensitive skin,
limiting their choice of available products. Many of the perfumed and scented lotions and creams used for skin care
contain products that can cause a reaction and not conducive to sensitive skin care, regardless of their claims.
There are also environmental concerns that need to be addressed in regards to sensitive skin care, including any
allergies to certain things within the household.
The first step in caring for a person’s skin is keeping the skin
hydrated. Drinking plenty of clear water and avoiding carbonated beverages is the first step, but using
moisturizers free of any artificial fragrances will help the skin retain its natural moisture. Artificial heat and
air conditioning also take a toll on the skin and sensitive skin care involves the use of a humidifier in dry
weather and air conditioning used sparingly during hot weather.
Many use exfoliants to remove the dead skin from their body, and
sensitive skin care may require less frequent exfoliation as the skin lipids can form a natural barrier to protect
the skin from harmful bacteria. Depending on a person’s skin sensitivity, many perfumes and scented lotions can
cause redness and allergic reactions.
Sun Can Damage Skin When No Burn Exists
A sunburn is known to cause skin damage, so an important part of
sensitive skin care calls for protection from sunlight, even if a person does not always burn. The effects of sun
exposure can be limited by using sunblock of at least 15 with a moisturizer, preferably a natural moisturizer to
reduce the chance of having a reaction to the ingredients.
When you do have a sensitive skin reaction, the use of botanical
products is often recommended to minimize the damage. Chamomile, aloe vera and green tea can minimize the effects
of skin irritations to sensitive skin. Additionally, some people may have an allergic reaction to their own
perspiration and washing excessive sweat off the body can dramatically help in this situation. A regular washing
regimen, using unscented moisturizing soap, can help the body remain clean and moisturized.
Many of the products produced for sensitive skin care use alpha
hydroxide which have slightly larger molecules to provide the even penetration of the product into the skin. It can
also help reduce and possibly eliminate any skin irritation associated with sensitive skin reactions to mane body
cleansers.
